The children have been enjoying the water container in the classroom. We have been experimenting with color mixing, measuring, floating/sinking objects and lots of basic "what will it do?". The turkey baster proved to be an interesting thing to try, as well as the squirting fish and sea animals. This was a great way to incorporate learning in a fun, simple activity area.

The Nursery School and School Age Programs worked on a large painted earth display over last past week to celebrate earth day. We decided to list ideas for keeping a clean earth all year 'round. Once everyone hand printed on the paper we divided it into sections and wrote down "green" ideas for January to December. Now we have a plan to help keep the planet clean all year! Click on the slideshow below to read through the story of the week. I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont is a great self-esteem boosting book which led us to a great discussion about differences. This was a great way to spend pink day yesterday for "No Bullying". Instead of focusing on the negative behaviors bullies so often have we focused on building positive feelings of acceptance and understanding. ~Melony A fun library find! The Easter bunny sure did some silly things at our homes this Easter. From pooping on the carpet to nibbling on carrots in the fridge, he was a busy bunny. I found this book to go along with our silly stories about other things animals should not be doing. Karin Ireland is an interesting writer with a wild imagination. The children were entertained by this story and wanted to read it again and again. This is a great book to help children learn about numbers in a fun way. We each adopted a little duck for the day and used it to act out this story by Eric Carle. Visit amazon to purchase this book by Stella Blackstone. The children enjoyed the illustrations of different parts of the world. The rhyming story fit in perfectly to our discussion about the world and our ongoing learning of numbers. Mixing colors, testing brushes, blotting, stroking and lines. This is what Kathleen talked to us about today when she visited to help us with some painting techniques. The children had a blast coming up with their very own canvas creations. We started with a white/blue sky and added colors for the sun. Then we added grass at the bottom, and then our imaginations could not hold back. Some of us created Easter bunnies, others tried trees. There was a semi-truck and some colorful designs. We definitely let our true colors show and flow through the brushes. Thank you Kathleen Lagasse for visiting our class and teaching all about what you love to do. We will definitely never forget all the colors we mixed and fun we had today! - Miss Melony Frieze On Tuesday and Wednesday this week the Nursery School programs celebrated the Irish holiday- St.Patrick's Day. We had a scavenger hunt throughout the classroom, charted Lucky Charm marshmallows and played/sang 5 Little Shamrocks. The children were filled with Irish Luck when they found the pot of green gold in the sink! I hope ever We had a great visit to the recycling depot where we got to see the new recycling truck, the forklift, the recycling "baler" and the recycling kitty cat! We learned about why we recycle and how they use these materials to make various items such as car parts, toy stuffing and jacket lining. Did you know that the garbage truck used to run in Souris 5 days a week, and now that 98% of homes recycle they only require garbage pick up 3 1/2 days each week. :) Thank you Kathy, Paul and Amy for accommodating our 4 very different groups. We were very fortunate this morning to have a visit from Sam's baby chickens. We learned lots of new things about chickens such as; - Some chickens can lay blue eggs, brown eggs, and PINK eggs- instead of the typical white we see in the store. All the colored eggs taste similar to a white egg and are just as healthy. - Chicken poop is great for composting and using to help in the garden. - Once the chickens are older they will begin to eat vegetable scraps such as carrot peels. Some of us were brave enough to feel the soft feathers these baby chickens have, others were unsure about the quick moving little chicks. After a very thorough hand washing session we returned to the classroom to We at the school programs will now be making use of the school's composting bin and helping the earth by starting our very composting program in the classroom. All this is new to Miss Frieze as well so we are learning together as we go! I challenge each and every one of you to start or continue a composting program at home and leave comments below with helpful tips and hints to help us. I am so excited for our trip to the local recycling center this month which should help us solidify |
