I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday season. I definitely did, and am thrilled to be back at work in 2012.
This week we talked about being healthy. Some of the things we discussed were eating healthy, staying active and having fun! Next week Monday and Tuesday we will visit the Dental Center to learn about how dental health contributes to our overall health. Please be sure you return your permission forms or email permission for your child to attend these trips. We will be walking down to and back from the dental center so please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. If the temperature is colder than -25 we will postpone the trip and have class as usual that day- as our licensing manual states we may not take children outside in those temperatures.
During the week we read the story called Don't Forget The Oatmeal written by B.G. Ford. It features Ernie and Bert from Sesame Street. They go on a shopping trip to the grocery store. I used this book to help us talk about healthy food choices. The children had lots of great ideas about great food to eat. We talked about oranges containing vitamin C, bananas have potassium and meat has protein which gives us energy.
The other book we looked at was Human Body Book by Leslie McGuire. This book discusses bodies, bones, muscles, skin, the brain, stomach, lungs and heart. We looked through half of it and will continue next week. The children were surprised to learn that they have a skeleton inside them, and proud to know that even their face has muscles.
Everyone seems to be enjoying our Continents song!!! Yaiii!!!! Some of the children already know all the names of the 7 continents. Please ask your child about this and sing it with them at home. There is a link above for the song if you don't already know it. I understand that the children do not comprehend the concept of what a continent is, however learning these words will help them excel later in life when they are taught these concepts. They will absorb all the knowledge we give them right now so read read read, teach teach teach, laugh laugh laugh!!!!
I met with a few parents to discuss the possibility of the Nursery School doing a fundraiser which would raise funds to purchase supplies to enhance the geography and mathematics areas of our classroom, as well as pay for the hand-van trips we will be taking to the care home each month and money would be set aside to help pay for a graduation celebration at the end of the year.
We decided to ask parents whether they would prefer to help with planning a family fun night or make a donation to the Nursery School to support the program. I am in the process of reading, replying and assessing replies to the request, and we will have more information next week about the outcome. Please send me an email with your comments if you haven't yet done so. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Ask your child: "How do you make an i??" They should answer: "A line and a DOT!"
Next week: Dental Office field trips, Letter Jj- Jumping Jim.
See the December blog for more important January dates!!!!!
Enjoy your weekend,
