This week each class had an opportunity to combine ingredients (baking soda, food coloring, vinegar) which created a volcanic eruption. They had been asking about the "big volcano" game since the first day, so finally we had a chance to do the experiment.
The books we read this week are:
Love Your World By Dawn Sirett- this book provides examples of ways children can help the earth. For example it discusses turning off the light when you are not using a room or reusing and recycling materials.
Leaves By David Ezrastein- in this story a bear experiences the coming of fall for the first day. It was a good lead into the season to come and the children talked about how the leaves look now, and how they might look in a few weeks.
WOW! Said the Owl- This story discusses colors as a small owl stays awake during the day instead of night and sees many new exciting colors in the environment. After the story each child painted a picture using all the colors found in the story. These pictures are posted outside our classroom abouve the locker area in the hallway.
This month our focus is on how we can help the earth so we watched some youtube videos about recycling. One was a Jack Johnson song about the 3 Rs and the other was a song by Spongebob about Recycling. The children then helped Miss Frieze make a small box for recycling items from our classroom. At snack time we talked more about recycling and I showed the children the 3 arrows that go in a triangle or circle on our garbage to tell us that it can be recycled. Everyone looked at items in their own snack bag to decide if it should be recycled or not. We will be taking these items to the recycling center with us next week.
Please remember that there is no Nursery School class on Monday, September 26th. The make-up class day will be Friday, September 30th. Field trips are scheduled for Tuesday, September 27th and Wednesday, September 28th at the regular class times.
