This week we visited the police station. Each class had their own tour which brought up new questions and new adventures. The morning class was silent most of the trip- until it was time to ask questions, of course. They wanted to know everything about the equipment belt, radios, guns, "magic" fingerprint dust and everything else we looked at. "Why!? ... But why!? ... Soooo Why!?" Thank you to Officer Acquisto and Officer John for taking time to answer all of the "whys".
The afternoon group was mostly excited about the paper storage room "WOW, this is so AWESOME!!!" said one of the children. Officer Acquisto took the opportunity to explain that there is indeed a lot of paper work to be done when you are a police officer.
We loved the feeling of the soundproof walls in the interview room. "It feels like string" said one child.
The gym was fun to see. We discussed that police officers need to stay healthy and strong in case they need to chase someone or do lots of working while patrolling an area.
Since we have been exploring our own fingerprints we had the pleasure of seeing the "magic" fingerprint dust. Officer John put his big "invisible" fingerprint on the plastic. We couldn't find it. Then he used a soft brush (looked like a make up brush) to brush on a black powder. This made the fingerprint appear!!!!! MAGIC!!! The children talked a bit more about how their fingerprint is special to them and not the same as anyone else in the whole world.
Thank you to our volunteers who joined us on the tours. I couldn't have done it without you!!!! What a great day. :)
